Answering late to what I guess was the QotD on the 21st, but I saw it on ... Jessamyn's page I think? And I got to thinking. I'm a huge packrat and I'm the offspring of two packrats as well (which means I'll inherit even more old stuff later, gulp), so it's kinda hard to mentally take in all those possessions big or small -- mostly priceless with memories but hard-valueless, too -- to extract the oldest from the accumulation.
But then it came to me; older than the handwritten tiny diaries of the great great aunt from 1919, older than the 19th century afghan rifle Dad bought in the seventies... I own the house I grew up in, and it's been built in the 14th century.
I don't think I'd ever thought about it in those terms, 'the oldest thing I own'. I'm a little ... impressed, sort of, a little dazed thinking of that.
Ooh, that definately tops anything I can think of! read more
